How I Became a Thrift-oholic

Thrifting has always been my sweet tooth. When I was younger, my mother and I would have dates to all the thrift stores in town; Deseret Industries, Savers, Plato's Closet, and locally owned shops.

How Things All Started

When we would go thrifting, we would look at everything! House decor, appliances, movies, and clothing. I loved Savers because they have colored sticker discounts. Any clothing with the color of the day would receive a discount and the discounts changed hourly over the intercom. How great is that?

Savers (obviously) was my most favorite thrift store. They had high quality items for extremely great prices and I was never disappointed. This is where my love for thrifting came (thanks mom)! I shared this love with my family for thrifting. There was such a taboo that thrift store were gross, but when the clothes are prepared correctly, the options are endless.

From that point on, I would go into retail stores and look at things that I knew I could get at any thrift store for a couple of dollars. Jeans, jean jackets, bags, and more were all of the items I loved. I loved buying sweaters and t-shirts to re-vamp and re-style. Making looks myself was so fulfilling.

Projects for Days

After that, I started making projects. These projects were mostly jeans and distressed shorts. I would find old Levi's and cut and shed them into beautiful shorts that were just right for me. I always was asked where I got my things from and I told them I created them myself (the best feeling in the world).

This love for thrifting created The Lavish Lemon. I wanted to share all of my tips and tricks about thrifting and scrunchies. That was so satisfying and inspiring. I saw others taking my blogs and applying them. I became the neighborhood savvy friend. Friends wanted to go on thrifting dates to find cute things and I remember telling my friend Becca,”you have to try it on even if you think its ugly.” She loved the items she tried on and was extremely surprised.

You are Capable

I wanted something bigger than my thrifted clothing, I worked on Poshmark selling clothing and that pivoted when my clothing was “too mainstream.” I started making scrunchies to take looks from sour to sweet. This was brilliant. I was doing something I love and I found my niche. The scrunchies were then put on hold because I lost confidence in myself. I was struggling with the creation of them because I wanted them to be perfect and without flaw. I couldn't get the stitches just right as my sewing machine is a little bit older. I was frustrated.

I decided that I wouldn’t want any of my friends or family to give up on their niche so why would I allow myself to do so. I created more scrunchies and got back into the process of starting again. It’s okay to lose sight of the things you dream of doing,as long as you find your light again.
